2011 Educator of the Month Recipients

Thomas A. Lawrence
Fountain Hills Middle School
Fountain Hills Unified School Dist.


Mr. Lawrence has been Principal of Fountain Hills Middle School for the past six years. During his tenure he has successfully implemented the middle school philosophy in a rapid growth school. He has successfully implemented various programs that support high academic achievement and appropriate citizenship for his students. In addition to his normal responsibilities Mr. Lawrence is currently overseeing the programming and design phases of a new 900 student middle school which is scheduled to be completed next year.

3rd Grade Teacher

"Bev" is a very innovative and creative teacher, she specializes in integrating learning across the curriculum. Currently her students are enthusiastically engaged in a unit dealing with peanuts and George Washington Carver. We observed the students growing peanut plants, charting information, writing to explain a process, making peanut butter from scratch, and doing related art projects. She has her students set positive personal and educational home and school goals each month.  Bev embraces challenges and turns them into successes.


Josephine "Jo" S. Gronley
Cheyenne Elementary School
Scottsdale Unified School District

Kindergarten Teacher

Jo likes to refer to herself as a veteran kindergarten teacher. She has launched a generation of enthusiastic, self-motivated learners. She provides developmentally appropriate instruction weaving phonemic awareness into a tapestry of parent-supported instruction incorporating traditional and whole language approaches. Her classroom more closely mimics a child's art museum than a typical classroom. Her students celebrate diversity as they learn about the traditions and holidays of various cultures.

6th grade Social Studies - Ancient Civilizations


Mrs. Chalfin's students travel back in time to ancient civilizations. They experience the daily lives of the people who lived during these times as well as analyze the impact these civilizations have on our world today. Students have developed a classroom webpage where they keep daily records of what they are learning as well as compiling a page of websites for students to access the information highway. Her students become actively involved in each destination and are becoming experts in Eastern Geography. Please feel free to visit her classroom webpage at


Gail Waltuch
Corona Del Sol High School
Tempe Union High District


Gail is currently in the language department at Corona Del Sol High School, she has been a dynamic force with the district and seen much growth. Initially Gail started at Tempe High, and has been instrumental in the opening of both Marcos de Niza and Corona del Sol. She has been a huge influence on the success of many former students. In addition to her teaching Gail has been a volunteer for many projects, including volunteering with "Pet Therapy" at Desert Samaritan Hospital for the past five years, and currently with the Children's Crisis Center. She brings her Spanish classes to life with her innovative workshops and projects.

Gary WaltuchGary
McKemy Middle School

7th Grade
American History

Mr. Waltuch is an outstanding 7th grade educator in the Tempe Elementary District. In addition to his outstanding classroom activities, he has just recently been the teacher sponsor for three of his students in the Future City Project. Their Future City Project was for an underwater city complete with a working model of the city. This project earned two awards from the judging committee. One of the awards was for business practices, and the other was an efficient transportation award.

5th Grade Teacher
Student Council Co-Sponsor

For the previous 32 years Terry has made learning fun for hundreds of students who have attended Kiva, Hopi, and Zuni Elementary Schools in Scottsdale. Terry enjoys working with 5th grade students, and has a real zeal for the curriculum of U.S. History. Of major importance to Terry is students setting goals for themselves. One of the activities Terry helps with is co-sponsoring the student council for the past 10 years at Zuni. With his emphasis on teaching leadership skills the council raised in excess of $2500.00 last year. From Terry's efforts over the years some of the recognition and awards he has received are the America West- Phoenix Suns, teacher of the Month, The Saturn Teacher of the Month, and the D.A.R.E. Educator of the Year award for the State of Arizona. Congratulations Terry and keep up the Great Work!


Jennifer Pendar
Tsaile Public School
Chinle Unified School Dist.

HOSTS Program Coordinator

Jennifer Pendar is starting her third year as HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed) Program Coordinator at Tsaile Public School. Jennifer's caseload consists of students who are achieving two years below their peers in reading. Student's are put on individualized lesson plans based on their individual needs. Jennifer's primary objective is to match each of her students with an adult or student mentor. These mentors work one-on-one with a student, on lessons designed by her. She has had success encouraging Tsaile's Jr High students to mentor 3rd graders and any adults she can find to spare 45 minutes a week to work with her students. Jennifer's passion is her students, and helping them to become proficient readers and respectful members of society. If you would like to mentor a student, please call her to set up a time.

"Mr. Eddie Scott is a sixth grade teacher at Many Farms Public School. He has spent many years in education in different positions; teacher, principal, and parent. His class often has perfect attendance which tells us his classes are exciting. His commitment to educating our students shows in many aspects. His teamwork and helpfulness earned him this nomination from his principal."

"Mrs. Ruth Logan is a first grade teacher with Many Farms Public School. She has been here over 20 years. Mrs. Logan's dedication to youth goes beyond regular work hours. She and her husband spent the other hours with their own children and their friends. They travel to bike races near and far. Her faith and positive spirit is felt by all her colleagues. This earned her this nomination."
